Beat the Winter Blues with Cookies!

Posted by Ken Sparks on

It's the 345th day of January - or so it seems. Actually it's January 19th, and it's Blue Monday - the most depressing day of the year, so the internet tells me. The holidays are over, we are back to work, and it feels like we will never see the sun again. Well, that's how it feels here in Newmarket! It's been a grey, snowy month, and a chance sighting of the sun feels like a cause for celebration!

Of course, Blue Monday really isn't a thing - it was a marketing ploy dreamt up by a travel company 20 years ago. But it is a reminder to take care of our mental health at this time of year, when the winter blues set in, and for some, Seasonal Affective Disorder.

We all have different tactics to beat the winter blues - here are some of my go to's:

  • Getting out for a walk with Winner. Even when it's cold, it feels good to get some fresh air and daylight.
  • Call a friend - a chat with a friend is a great antidote for feeling sad.
  • Move your body - crank up the music and dance in your living room. Take the stairs instead of the elevator at work, or go for a walk around the block at lunch.
  • Wear something colourful. Throw on a bright scarf, some funky socks, or your favourite Life is Good tee (or pick up a new one - we have some great new colours)!
  • Buy some flowers and put them on your desk - a little reminder that spring is just around the corner.
  • Do something you enjoy. Today, that's baking. I've had a hankering for biscotti - so I made apricot almond biscotti - with chocolate of course. And I've got chocolate chip cookies in the oven for Ken!

Days like today also remind us that it's OK to take things a little slower, to rest and reflect. Be like winter, and prepare for the spring and sunnier days. And that it is important to take care of ourselves - and if you are feeling weighed down by the season or the challenges of the new year, or suffering from SAD, please know that support is available, and brighter days will be here soon.
